Stimulus Hilarity

A while back, Matt Yglesias suggested dropping the word “stimulus” in favor of “fiscal expansion” to avoid silly sounding quotes like this from John Boehner:

“How can you spend hundreds of millions of dollars on contraceptives?” Boehner asked. “How does that stimulate the economy?”

Boehner said congressional Republicans are also concerned about the size of the package.

It is no surprise that House Republicans have concerns about package size, but someone really should have explained to Boehner that the contraceptives will be ribbed for economic pleasure.

No, but seriously folks, when are Republicans going to learn they can’t just swing the Culture War cudgel to bat down any proposal? It’s fairly simple how fiscal expansion works: government spending on goods directs money towards a given industry. With the newfound demand for that industry, companies within that industry hire employees, or at the very least, don’t fire ones they would have otherwise. Hence jobs are created or saved. This is true regardless of the apparent hilarity of the product.
