Obama and Race

I’m watching Ted Kennedy speak right now, whose speech, and indeed presence alone, is pretty inspirational, so I don’t meant to nitpick but he just mentioned that Brarack Obama will “close the book” on race. All told, I thought the speech was great, and I want to be clear I don’t think this sentiment is at all unique to Kennedy, but in order to seriously confront our country’s race issue we have to be honest that merely electing a black person will not eliminate racism in America. It will have been a great achievement, but it will hardly “close the book.”

On a related note, for a really insightful piece on Obama’s “race problem”, check out this piece.
