In Heads in the Sand, which details the rise of a diastrious neoconservative foreign policy, Matt Yglesias outlines the “Green Lantern Theory” of foreign policy. To summarize, this theory is roughly the belief that any perceived threat to the United States can and will be crushed primarily by collective willpower. While this sounds glib, it’s detailed at greater length in the book, and given Bush’s propensity for talk about “emboldening” the terrorists and specifically equating domestic support for the war in Iraq with our ability to win, it’s actually fairly insightful. Anyhow, while this trope may have been the impetus for misguided international interventions, it surely seems to be a viable way of promoting hegemony in international basketball. Go USA!
