It’s Raining Men

The Associated Press delivers some hard hitting journalism with it’s report on the emergence of “Man Showers”, male only parties where men can congregate and are “usually held to coincide with the bridal shower, [to] give…husbands, brothers and uncles an opportunity to hang out.”

However, this story is not just feel good campy crap, it’s a testament to reporters’ weaknesses for public relations professionals willing to sell a “trend story”. Allana Baroni, “the entertainment expert” for the web site suggests that…

It’s another example of grooms leaving their stereotypical roles behind, …noting that male bridesmaids and female groomsmen are becoming more common.

But alas, the men at these parties seem to have a different take:

Highlights of the party included playing football, drinking games and Rock Band, a video game where players perform in virtual bands…

…Men also are recognizing that showers are a great way to acquire tools and other necessities needed to maintain a home, said Abby Buford, spokeswoman for Lowe’s Home Improvement stores, which launched an online wedding registry in 2006…

…At his shower, guests ate from old license plates, participated in a nail pounding contest and were judged on how manly they wrapped their gifts, most of which were tools

So let’s recap: parties where the guests exchange only tools, swill beer, play football and video games, and of course, in a blatant attempt to win the award for “Least Subtle Metaphor”, participate in nail pounding contests (?) are an indication that grooms are “leaving their stereotypical gender roles behind”? Way to go, Associated Press.
